Painting Interpretations

My painting interpretation photographs was done as a group assignment where we were asked to use a large format camera to shoot a series of still-life photographs. We thought what better of a way to shoot than to use famous paintings as our inspiration. We each chose to put our own spin on the project and collectively the project came together to have 6 interpretations. These are the two that I shot, "Vase with 12 Sunflowers" by Van Gogh and "Basket of Fruits" by Van Der Ast.

Consumer Byproduct

This photograph is a self portrait in which you can only see the "outer shell" of who I am. Our culture is based on the consumption of products and even with the economy the way it is, I still choose to spend what little money I have on expensive products that I don't need. It is too easy in this day and age to charge your life away. This piece is meant to ask the viewer to look at who they are and how products define their identity. By taking my body away from objects in the image, the only things left were the products of which my identity is based. The clothes and shoes I wear and the makeup I apply are everyday decisions I make in order to present myself the way I want others to see me. I AM a consumer byproduct.

This is a piece I did focusing on small sections of an area. I then put them together to show the bigger picture.

"blue" installation

Pinhole Camera

In these images a pinhole camera was used. The camera works by placing a sheet of RC photo paper into the can (camera). The paper is then exposed by letting light through a pin sized hole in the can for a long period of time (usually 10 seconds-2 minutes depending on the light source). You then develope the paper in the dark room and it leaves you with a paper negative. The negative is then placed face down on another piece of photo paper and light is exposed letting you make a direct print.

The Proof Study Maneuver of Novgorod, Russia

This was a study done on sleep/dreams. Each night the subjects were asked to think about Novgorod, Russia before they went to sleep. If they didn't know what the place looked like they were asked to imagine whatever they thought it looked like. In the morning the subjects were questioned about what they dreamt...if they had managed to dream of this location. The study was photographed using a Holga camera on the bulb setting for the time the subjects were sleeping.
